Lord Loss is the first novel in The Demonata series by best-selling teenage horror author Darren Shan. It was originally published in the UK on June 6, 2005. Soon after, it appeared in Japan and America, where Shan's previous series, The Saga of Darren Shan, had sold especially well. Set in Ireland. It is told in first person through Grubbs Grady, and in present tense.

Plot Summary[edit | edit source]

After seeing his parents and sister being mutilated by demons, Grubbs is in shock by what he has seen- a crocodile-headed dog, a hell child and the Demon Master, Lord Loss.

Police ask Grubbs who killed his family, he told them demons did it but the police wont believe him. Grubbs is then put into a hospital for the clinically insane where he can be treated. Nobody believed Grubbs, and so he didn't think the doctors could ever help him.

Until the day his Fathers brother, Dervish Grady comes to see him in hospital. He showed Grubbs 3 pictures of the Demons that attacked him. He asked if he knew them or had seen them, he had. During the short visit, Dervish told Grubbs he would have to lie and pretend the treatment was helping him so he could escape and learn more about his family's murders and blood-soaked history.

The Poem - Lord Loss[edit | edit source]

Lord Loss sows all the sorrows of the world,

Lord Loss seeds the grief-starched trees,

In the center of the web, lowly Lord Loss bows his head,

Mangled hands, naked eyes Fangled snaked his soul line Curled inside like textured sin, bloody curdled sheets for skin,

In the center of the web, vile Lord Loss torments the dead,

Over strands of red, Lord Loss crawls Dispensing pain, despising all

Shuns friends, nurtures foes

Ravages hope, breeds woe

Drinks moons, devours suns

Twirls his thumb till the reaper comes,

In the center of the web, lush Lord Loss is all that's left.
